Gifted & IQ Testing in NYC (WISC-V & Stanford-Binet)

When you’re applying to gifted programs or specialized schools in New York City, you’re often required to submit formal IQ testing—most commonly WISC-V or Stanford-Binet scores, and for some ages, WPPSI or WAIS.

At Aspire Psychotherapy, we offer single-session gifted and IQ testing in NYC with a licensed psychologist. In one 4–5 hour in-person appointment, your child completes the required test, and you receive:

  • Accepted WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, WPPSI, or WAIS scores (depending on age and program)

  • Clear, objective information about your child’s cognitive strengths

  • Guidance on how to use the results for gifted applications and educational planning

Is Gifted & IQ Testing Right for Your Child (or Teen)?

Gifted and IQ testing may be a good fit if:

  • Your child seems advanced, highly curious, or easily bored in class

  • Teachers or caregivers have suggested your child may be gifted or 2E (twice-exceptional)

  • You’re applying to gifted, specialized, or independent schools that require WISC-V or Stanford-Binet scores

  • You want a clear, objective picture of cognitive strengths to guide enrichment or placement decisions

If your main question is, “Does my child qualify for gifted or advanced programs?” a focused single-session gifted/IQ evaluation is often enough.

If you’re also worried about ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or mood/behavior, we may recommend a comprehensive psychological or neuropsychological evaluation instead. We’ll help you decide during the intake so you’re not over- or under-testing.

What Is Gifted & IQ Testing?

Gifted and IQ testing measures how a person thinks, reasons, and solves problems compared with same-age peers. At Aspire, our gifted testing in NYC uses age-appropriate, standardized tests such as:

  • WISC-V for most school-age children (roughly ages 6–16)

  • Stanford-Binet for a broad age range (including preschoolers and older adolescents)

  • WPPSI for preschoolers and younger children

  • WAIS for older teens and adults

These evaluations are:

  • Standardized – We use normed, widely accepted measures that NYC schools and programs recognize.

  • Objective – Scores reflect performance on puzzles, reasoning tasks, memory, and processing speed—not opinions.

  • Focused – Unlike a full psychological evaluation, this is streamlined to answer questions about giftedness and cognitive ability, not every possible diagnosis.

They’re ideal when you need IQ scores for gifted or school applications or want to know whether your child is functioning in the gifted range.

What to Expect: One 4–5 Hour Session

Step 1: Brief Intake (Virtual)

Before testing, you’ll meet virtually with Dr. Anya Scolaro, Psy.D., to:

  • Review your goals and application timelines

  • Confirm which test is appropriate for age and program (e.g., WPPSI, WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, or WAIS)

  • Discuss any school or program requirements and what the testing day will look like

Step 2: Single In-Person Testing Session (4–5 Hours)

Testing takes place in-person at our Manhattan (Upper East Side) or Hudson Valley (Stone Ridge) office. Your child (or teen/adult) works one-on-one with Dr. Scolaro:

  • Completing puzzles, patterns, questions, and tasks that measure reasoning, memory, and processing speed

  • Taking regular breaks to move, snack, and reset

  • In a supportive, calm environment that still follows standardized procedures so scores remain valid for schools and programs

Step 3: Scoring, Results & Next Steps

After testing:

  • Dr. Scolaro scores and interprets the WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, WPPSI, or WAIS results (as applicable)

  • You’ll receive a clear breakdown of scores and percentiles

  • She explains what the numbers mean, how they relate to gifted criteria, and how to share them with schools or admissions offices

What You’ll Receive from Gifted & IQ Testing

    Every gifted/IQ evaluation package includes:

    • Administration of an age-appropriate IQ test

      • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) or Stanford-Binet for most gifted school applications

      • Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) for preschool-age children

      • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) for older adolescents and adults

    • A score summary with index scores, Full Scale IQ, and percentile ranks

    • A concise written summary you can share with schools and gifted programs

If you later need a comprehensive psychological or neuropsychological evaluation (for ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, or accommodations), we can build on this IQ testing so you’re not starting from scratch.

Choose the Gifted & IQ Testing Package That Fits Your Needs

We offer two levels of gifted and IQ testing so you can choose the option that best matches your goals and timeline.

Option 1: Gifted & IQ Testing – Scores-Only Package

This streamlined option is designed for families who primarily need official IQ scores to apply to gifted programs or specialized schools.

You’ll receive:

  • Administration of an age-appropriate IQ test (WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, WPPSI, or WAIS, depending on age and program requirements)

  • A formal score report with index scores, Full Scale IQ, and percentile ranks

  • Documentation suitable for gifted and school program applications

This package keeps the focus on providing the scores required for admissions or program eligibility, without a lengthy narrative report. It’s a good fit if your child is otherwise doing well and your main goal is to submit scores by a deadline.

Option 2 - Gifted & IQ Testing – Expanded Report & Planning Package

This option is for families who want more in-depth interpretation and guidance beyond scores alone.

You’ll receive:

  • Everything in the Scores-Only Package

  • A longer interpretive report that explains your child’s cognitive strengths and relative weaknesses in clear, accessible language

  • A feedback session with Dr. Scolaro to review the results, answer questions, and discuss implications for school and enrichment

  • Recommendations for educational planning, enrichment, and whether any further evaluation (for 2E, ADHD, learning differences, or other concerns) might be helpful

This package is often chosen by families who:

  • Want a benchmark to track progress over time

  • Are considering whether a full psychological or neuropsychological evaluation is warranted

  • Suspect possible twice-exceptionality (2E), ADHD, or other concerns and want more context before deciding on next steps

Expedited Reporting (Optional Add-On)

If you are working with a tight application deadline, we may be able to offer expedited scoring and reporting as an additional service. Availability depends on our testing schedule and current caseload, and can be discussed during your intake with Dr. Scolaro.

How Gifted & IQ Testing Supports NYC School & Program Admissions

Families in New York City and larger New York often use gifted and IQ testing to support:

  • Independent and specialized school applications

  • Gifted and talented programs and accelerated tracks

  • Applications for selective or Hunter-style programs

  • Placement decisions when a child seems under-challenged in their current school

Because we use WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, WPPSI, and WAIS, your scores can typically be submitted to multiple schools and programs across age ranges. During your intake, we’ll review any specific requirements from your target schools so testing is aligned with your goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old should my child be for gifted or IQ testing?

We typically begin gifted and IQ testing around age 4, often using WPPSI or Stanford-Binet for younger children. For most school-age children, we use WISC-V, and for older adolescents and adults we may use WAIS. Program age ranges and test preferences vary, and we’ll review those during the intake.

Will schools and programs accept these scores?

In most cases, yes. We use widely accepted measures like WISC-V, Stanford-Binet, WPPSI, and WAIS. Our summaries are designed to be submitted to independent schools, gifted programs, and specialized programs. If a specific program has unique requirements, we’ll discuss them ahead of time so we choose the right test.

What if I’m also concerned about ADHD, autism, or dyslexia?

If you have concerns beyond giftedness—such as ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities like dyslexia—we may recommend a comprehensive psychological or neuropsychological evaluation instead of, or in addition to, single-session IQ testing. We’ll help you choose the right level of assessment so you get meaningful answers without unnecessary testing.

Do you offer IQ testing for teens or adults?

Yes. In addition to child gifted testing, we provide WAIS and Stanford-Binet IQ testing for adolescents and adults who are curious about cognitive strengths, planning academic paths, or exploring possible 2E profiles.

How soon can we schedule gifted or IQ testing, and when are appointments offered?

We can typically schedule gifted and IQ testing within about two weeks, depending on our current openings. The intake appointment is virtual and takes place on weekdays (Monday–Friday) without your child present, so we can focus on goals, program requirements, and choosing the right test.

Testing itself is in person only at our Manhattan (Upper East Side) or Hudson Valley (Stone Ridge) office. Gifted and IQ testing sessions are usually offered on weekends on a first-come, first-served basis, with occasional weekday availability. During the intake, we’ll review upcoming openings and find a date that works for your family.
